Meeting Me for the First Time: What to Expect

Opening the Door to Therapy

Taking the first step into therapy can feel like opening a door into the unknown. Some of us feel curious, some a little nervous and some may wonder if this is the right time. I’ve been there too and I know how much it matters to feel welcomed, understood and safe right from the start.

Creating a Space Where You Can Simply Be

My aim for our first meeting is to create an atmosphere that feels cosy, calm and casual, where you can show up exactly as you are. No pressure, no expectations. Everyone is truly welcome, and I encourage you to bring your real self, your thoughts, questions, worries and hopes. This space is for you.

What Makes the First Session a Little Different

Our first session has a bit more structure than the ones that follow, simply because there are a few practical steps we’ll go through together. These are all part of building a foundation for our work.

Talking Through the Therapeutic Contract

We’ll begin by talking through the therapeutic contract, everything from how sessions work, to boundaries, to expectations on both sides. Once we’ve discussed it and you feel comfortable, we’ll both sign it. This agreement helps us create a clear, safe and shared understanding of how we’ll work together.

Completing the Screening Tool

Next, we’ll complete a screening tool. This isn’t a test, it’s simply a way to gather more information about your current wellbeing. It helps us get a clearer picture of your experiences, patterns and needs, and supports us in working safely and effectively.

Understanding Confidentiality

Confidentiality is an essential part of therapy. I’ll explain clearly what stays between us and the rare situations where I may need to break confidentiality to keep you or someone else safe. My priority is for you to feel secure and fully informed.

Sharing What Brought You Here

We’ll also talk about what brought you here, whether it’s something specific, something unclear, or a general sense that you want things to feel different. There’s no right or wrong way to share your story. You can go at your own pace.

A Gentle Introduction to CBT

Finally, I’ll explain how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works, what sessions usually look like, and how we’ll collaborate. We’ll discuss the possible timeframe for therapy, so you have a sense of what to expect moving forward.

You Are Welcome Here

Most of all, I want you to feel comfortable and welcomed, able to speak freely and be your true self. Therapy is a space where you don’t need to impress or hide anything. You’re simply invited to be you.

A Brave and Meaningful First Step

Starting therapy is a brave step, and it’s completely normal to feel nervous before your first session. My hope is that after reading this, you feel a little more at ease, informed and perhaps even a little more ready. You won’t be taking this step alone — you will be welcomed, seen, and supported from the moment we begin.
